Bettendorf Police Announce the Passing of K-9 Officer, Old Dan

June 17, 2014

The Bettendorf Police Department recently announced the passing of one of their K-9 officers, Old Dan.  Old Dan was a yellowLabrador Retriever that the police department purchased in 2005 as a narcotics detection canine.  For over eight years, Old Dan and his handler Lt. Kent Keeshan were responsible for seizing large amounts of drugs including 32.9 kilos of cocaine, 7.59 pounds of ecstasy, and 543.24 pounds of marijuana.

Old Dan passed away on May 30, 2014 after surgery to remove a 9.7 pound tumor from his spleen.

A ceremony was held on Friday, June 13 at Oakdale Memorial Gardens in Davenport. Oakdale has a special section for police K-9's located in the pet cemetery. Officers from Bettendorf and other area agencies along with friends and family members attended the ceremony.  Old Dan is buried next to Bettendorf's first K-9 Caesar, who passed away in 1998.

The Bettendorf Police Department has made no decision at this time to purchase another K-9.  The department does have another dog, Bono, who is a full service K-9.
