Structure Fire in Bettendorf

On Monday, August 25 at approximately 10:36 p.m. Bettendorf Fire responded to a call of a building on fire at 1080 39th Street.  When firefighters arrived, fire was burning through the roof at the west end of the structure.  The building was evacuated.  The fire was quickly extinguished.

The cause of the fire was a lightning strike at approximately 2:30 p.m. The strike igniting some combustible material in the attic and it smoldered until it caught fire and was visible at approximately 10:36 p.m.

The building that housed 18 units was condemned.  There were 14 units that were occupied.  The American Red Cross helped with overnight accommodations and is helping the manager of the building find placement for the occupants.

The estimated damage to the building is approximately $400,000.

There were no injuries.
