Bettendorf Receives Voice of the People Awards

October 4, 2011

To support the mission and vision statement and to provide quality services to its citizens, the City of Bettendorf has conducted a citizen survey, utilizing the services of the National Citizen Survey, Inc. and the International City/County Management Association. The City has taken part in the survey in 2006, 2008, and 2010.  ICMA and NRC recognized 10 communities for their use of citizen surveys to influence service quality.  Two sets of awards, one for service excellence and one for significant improvement in service, were awarded at the ICMA Conference on September 19, 2011 in Milwaukee.  City Administrator Decker Ploehn received the awards for the City at the conference (see attached photo-Decker Ploehn with ICMA's Executive Director, Bob O'Neill.).

The jurisdictions receiving the Voice of the People Awards for Transformation are: Bettendorf, IA; Chanhassen, MN; Novi, MI; Scottsdale, AZ; South Lake Tahoe, CA; Suwanee, GA; and Williamsburg VA.  Bettendorf received this award for street repair services.

The jurisdictions receiving the Voice of the Peoples Awards for Excellence are: Bettendorf, IA, Chanhassen, MN; Needham, MA; Novi, MI; Scottsdale, AZ; Surprise, AZ; Suwanee, GA; Upper Arlington, OH; and Williamsburg, VA.  Bettendorf received this award for police services, garbage collection, recycling, library services, and quality of overall services.

All of the communities participate in The National Citizen Survey, which enables local governments to gather high value citizen data on budgeting, goal setting, performance measurement, and program planning.

This is the fifth year that ICMA and NRC announced the annual Voice of the People Awards. Communities receiving these awards showed the biggest improvement in service ratings and/or had the highest rated services according to a representative sample of their own residents. Award recipients were identified among all the jurisdictions that conducted The NCSTM in 2010. Those that received the Voice of the People Award for Transformation had a service quality rating improvement that was significantly higher than the rating from their most recent prior survey and larger than improvements shown in all other eligible jurisdictions in 2010. Communities receiving the Voice of the People Award for Excellence had a service quality rating that was in the top three among all eligible jurisdictions in 2010. To qualify for this award these communities also had to be in the top ten percent among over 500 jurisdictions in the NRC database of citizen surveys.

The City of Bettendorf also received the Voice of the People Award in 2007 and 2009.

The complete survey results are located on the City's webpage, www.bettendorf.org, under the Public Information dropdown.
