LED Lights in Bettendorf

During the next 10 years, MidAmerican Energy Company will transition away from their existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) streetlight to more efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) streetlight.

Rather than replace street lights as they fail over 10 years, the City of Bettendorf decided to expedite and complete the task by May of this year. Lighting in some private subdivisions in the City will not be changed immediately due to ornamental light poles. By speeding up the process, the City stands to realize significant savings on the operation costs of the lights. MidAmerican is replacing approximately 1,858 lights at a total cost to the City of $185,800. The estimated annual savings is $46,931 on the operation costs of the lights. At this rate, the project will pay for itself in just under four years and the annual savings will continue year after year. Over the past 10 years, the City already replaced traffic signals and City owned street lights in the downtown area with LED lighting.

LED lighting provides brighter, whiter, and more consistent light quality making Bettendorf streets safer through:

  • Fewer streetlight outages as LEDs have a life expectancy of 15 years, compared to 5-6 years of HPS streetlights.
  • A truer white light quality, which leads to better color rending, allowing colors to seem more natural.
  • Minimization of light trespass onto homes and businesses by the "aiming" of LED fixtures.
  • More consistent distribution of light resulting in fewer dark spots. Traditional light sources typically provide too much light in the area directly under the pole. This ensures that the outer areas surrounding the pole are well lit. Light from each LED can be guided with secondary optics to spread the light more evenly and ensure clearer, consistent lighting at all distances from the pole.

Because of the joint efforts of the City of Bettendorf and MidAmerican Energy Company, these energy efficiency upgrades are saving energy and saving taxpayer dollars in the long run – but most importantly this means better lighting and safer neighborhoods for our community.
