Subject Charged After Fleeing Traffic Stop

On Thursday, November 21, 2019 at approximately 0225 hours, Bettendorf police officers responded to the Isle of Capri Casino reference a theft complaint. Initial officers located a vehicle with a passenger matching the description provided by security personnel. The officer initiated a traffic stop on a 2007 white Dodge Caliber. When the driver of the vehicle stopped the passenger exited the vehicle and began to walk away from the traffic stop. When the initial officer contacted the passenger the driver of the Dodge Caliber drove away from the stop. Additional officers arrived on scene and attempted to stop the vehicle. As the secondary officer exited his squad car the driver quickly accelerated and struck the secondary officer with his vehicle. The Dodge then fled from officers at a high rate of speed Westbound into Davenport. The driver of the Dodge lost control and crashed near River Drive and Oneida Avenue in Davenport. The driver of the Dodge then attempted to flee the scene again, but the Dodge was disabled by the pursuing officer. The male was taken into custody and identified as Jonathan Swearingen, 24 years of age from Aledo, IL. Inside the vehicle was a 31 year old female from Milan, Il and her five year old daughter.

The officer is being evaluated and treated for possible minor injuries.

Swearingen was charged with Assault on a Peace Officer with a Deadly Weapon (felony), Eluding (felony), Child Endangerment (misdemeanor), Reckless Driving (misdemeanor), Violating One-Way Street (misdemeanor) and an Interstate Warrant.

The female passenger was not charged.

The passenger that walked away from the vehicle initially was stopped by another officer and identified at that time, but was released later with no charges.

The Davenport Police Department, Scott County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol assisted in apprehending Swearingen.
