The Bettendorf Parks and Recreation Department recently purchased and installed two fully accessible, stainless steel chess tables. One of the tables was installed at the Middle Park Lagoon Shelter, and the other at the Veterans Memorial Park shelter. The tables were manufactured by a local resident Brad Beyer, who worked with his father in developing the design. His father who is wheelchair bound is a chess enthusiast and has worked with others to bring a chess program to Bettendorf’s parks programs. Over the summer, they instructed day camp and summer playground program participants on the basic strategies of chess. The new tables, which were installed on July 10, will provide all citizens the chance to play chess in the parks. The unique design of the tables allows anyone, including wheelchair bound individuals to play.

On Friday, July 31, beginning at 9:00 a.m., a dedication ceremony will be held at Veteran’s Memorial Park, 1645 23rd Street.
