Contact: Kelly McGinnis, Program Manager, Mississippi River Network: 312-754-0406

During the September 1st City Council Meeting, Mayor Robert Gallagher will read a proclamation supporting a healthy Mississippi River. The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.

Mayor Gallagher and the City Council recognizes the importance of a healthy Mississippi River through the passage of this proclamation endorsing policies and practices that help ensure the future vibrancy of the Mississippi, while also promoting sustainable, nonstructural solutions to the challenges facing the river and the communities along it.

The Mississippi is truly America’s River—a critical source of water for 18 million people, a diverse and critical habitat for wildlife, the backbone of our economy and a rich part of our heritage. However, the river is also facing incredible challenges, like harmful algal blooms and the “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico and catastrophic flooding.

To build support for programs that protect and restore the river and its floodplain, the Mississippi River Network, in partnership with the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative, is partnering with local communities and their elected leaders to develop proclamations voicing their support for tools, such as green infrastructure, that work with nature to improve the health of the river system and ensure the future vibrancy of river communities.
