50th Anniversary of Middle Park Still On

POSTED: JULY 7, 2016

Plan to join us tonight at 8:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park Bandshell.  There will be tie-dying (bring your own item to tie-dye—t-shirts, socks, pillow cases, etc., and we will provide the supplies and a bag to get it home), playing a giant game of Simon Says, and holding a hula hoop contest for kids and adults!  To finish off the evening’s celebration, we’ll be showing an outdoor movie “The Love Bug” around 9:00 p.m.

The inclement weather has passed and we plan to party like it’s 1966!

The 70 acre site was purchased back in 1966 and became the largest park in the Bettendorf Community at that time. Over the years, the 70 acres was gradually converted from rolling farm and pasture into the multi-faceted amenity it is today! Some of the first developments included the ball fields that have hosted thousands of games over the years. Next to come was Middle Pool which was built in 1968 and renovated into the present day Splash Landing Family Aquatic Center in 1999. In the 1980’s, the Duck Creek Recreation Trail was extended through the Park and more amenities were added over the years including the Lagoon area and warming house, the Bandshell in 1976, and several shelters and playgrounds. More recently, we  added a Disc Golf Course and a Gaga Pit!

In 2001, the area south of Duck Creek was renamed Veterans Memorial Park in honor of the new Veterans Memorial that is located just west of the Bandshell. The many renovations and improvements throughout the park over the years have kept the area a true center of our community that continues to provide an amazing quality of life for our citizens!
