Public Works Day

BETTENDORF: The City of Bettendorf Public Works Department, in conjunction with National Public Works Week and the Bettendorf Recycling Commission will be conducting its annual "Public Works Day Open House and Recycling Fair" at the Bettendorf Maintenance Center on Saturday, May 21st, from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  The Maintenance Center is located at 4403 Devils Glen Road in Bettendorf.  This event is free and open to the public.


On display will be public works equipment including, among other things, garbage and recycling trucks, a snow plow, street flusher, street sweeper and loader.  "Hands-on" backhoe operation will be demonstrated.  Register to win free bus passes. See how a traffic camera operates and check out the "One-Man Patcher".  Learn about the benefits of native wildflowers and plants and how to create your own rain garden.  Come enjoy free coffee, soda, popcorn, ice cream, hot dogs and bratwurst.  Learn about vermicomposting and other urban sustainable practices.  Trash or yard waste sticker give-a-way.  Learn how to identify macro-invertebrates.  Face painting will be provided by Gloria Burlingame from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  See how the city uses a robotic station to survey a project.  Learn about E waste.  Come learn how to identify storm water pollutants and how to test for water quality in your local streams.  The Master Gardeners will be available to give tips on successful home composting.  Learn about earth friendly weed free gardening and bio-degradable products.  Free loose bulk compost will be given away, and residents should bring their own containers to put the compost in (limited to a 35 gallon trash can).  Learn about an environmentally friendly fertilizer for your garden or yard!
