Scam: Scammers Posing as Law Enforcement

This is a telephone scam that has been going around Davenport and Clinton County.  Scammers are posing as law enforcement and telling the victims an arrest warrant will be issued if they do not pay their overdue speed camera ticket.  Other calls state that payment for a red light violation is overdue and payment needs to be arranged to avoid any further prosecution.   The scammers request the victim purchase a Green Dot Money Pak card, load it with a set amount of money, and call the scammer back for further instructions.  The Green Dot Money Pak cards are commonly used for all types of telephone scams.

These telephone calls are NOT LEGITIMATE and do not originate from any law enforcement agency. Any Automated Enforcement Violations issued by the Davenport Police Department are mailed to the registered owner of the violating vehicle only.  Law enforcement officers do not collect fines, nor make phone calls to collect fines.

The City of Bettendorf does not have any speed enforcement or red light cameras in our city.  If anyone receives this type of telephone call, please be aware this is a scam and do not provide any information or money to the scammer.  Just hang up the phone immediately.  If you are able to identify a phone number from caller ID, please contact your local police department with the information.
