  • The Bettendorf Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Department offers a limited number of dorm rooms for housing of single, volunteer firefighters.
  • Housing is offered in exchange for response and on-duty shifts.


  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Iowa Drivers License.
  • U.S. Citizenship or possess a valid work permit.
  • Have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • State of Iowa Firefighter I certification.
  • Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (minimum)
  • Be and remain a Department member in good standing.
  • Must be available for a minimum of 24 hours to a maximum of 36 hours of duty per week.


  • Rent free housing.
  • Emergency response training and experience.


  • The Resident Firefighter will be required to sign an agreement with the Department stating he/she will commit 1 year of service to the program. The resident, Resident Coordinator and the Chief prior to the resident occupying a unit will sign a written contract.


  • Housing will be located at the Surrey Heights Station (5002 Crow Creek Rd).


  • Maintain the cleanliness of the station, inside and out.
  • Maintain the apparatus in a clean and response ready state.
  • Complete data entry in a timely fashion, including EMS and scene reports and daily shift reports.
  • Adhere to and maintain a working knowledge of the Department's Policy Manual and the Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
  • Immediately respond to all emergent and non-emergent calls when requested.
  • Two residents will be in station on duty from 1900 to 0700 hours daily.
  • Each resident will be required to be on duty a minimum of 24 hours to a maximum of 36 hours per week.
  • Two residents will be assigned to each shift, A, B and C shift.
  • Between the hours of 0700 to 1900 shall be referred to as on-call time. Response to calls during those hours is voluntary. Expenses shall be reimbursed at the pre-established rate for all responses.
  • On duty hours shall change as necessary as determined by the Chief.
  • On duty residents will immediately respond to all Group 600 pages and to all 630/640-district pages for fires, EMS, hazardous materials and public assistance calls for service.


  • Residents will be assigned to a shift, either A, B or C shift. There will be two residents on each shift who are required to be in uniform, in station and respond to calls between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
