Meet Bettendorf's Newest Employee: K-9 Lewis!

He's fully trained, highly driven, knows three languages... and only accepts a chew toy for pay.

IMG_0835The Bettendorf Police Department is excited to introduce the community to its new K-9 named Lewis.

Lewis is a one-year-old German Shepherd imported from Europe by Cedar Creek Kennels in Monmouth, Illinois, which specializes in police dog training. He understands commands in Hungarian, Dutch, and English.

Officer Derrick Said is Lewis' Handler and trained with Lewis for 10 weeks at Cedar Creek Kennels from July 2023 to October 2023. Officer Said was chosen from a panel of current and former K-9 Officers in the Bettendorf Police Department.

The pair work on 2nd Shift as BPD's other K-9, Ringo, continues his career on 3rd Shift (his only acceptable pay is a tennis ball, by the way).

Lewis was paid for by - and named after - a private donor who gave a generous donation to the BPD.
